On Sat. May 13,2006, the Canadian Federation of University Women/Orillia (CFUW/Orillia) at their 50th Anniversary Gala held at Geneva Park were honoured to hear Sally Armstrong, Amnesty International Award  winner, Member of the Order of Canada, Journalist and Author, speak on her personal experiences with the  women of Afghanistan.
Sally spoke very descriptively on the Afghan women & girls struggles, courage, rebellion & grace under the Taliban Regime. She was in Afghanistan for 5 years, as a journalist & referred to many of her first hand stories of working in this dangerous area-giving examples of accounts from her book-Veiled Threat, The Hidden Power of The Women Of Afghanistan.
Revealed from Sally's book was the fact that the Afghan women struggled to survive under the Taliban Regime at a time when they were denied employment, schooling & adequate health care & were confined to their homes unless accompanied by a male relative, Also, appearing alone in public or without a burqua ( a long dress that covered the women from head to toe ) could cause a public stoning.
Sally became involved with this assignment in Afghanistan because of her passion to give a voice to these courageous women who had been silenced.
Sally recently returned to Afghanistan & recounted a heartwarming story of how before her departure home, the Afghan women present stuffed her pockets with sweet cakes for her journey-- showing that there truly is a  fine balance between hope & despair---these brave women gave when they needed to receive---that is their legacy.
Sally left the CFUW members & guests with the positive statement--Women DO have the moral courage to right the wrongs.
Future projects by Sally Armstrong include a Documentary on the abuses of African Women ( female mutilation ) to be aired on television September, 2006. Also, soon to be released, new book, The Nine Lives Of Charlotte Taylor: First Woman Settler On The Miramachi - which recounts the life of Sally's great, great, great Grandmother., a true Canadian Pioneer.
